this is now

Come friends,
let us eat and drink
while we still can. while
we are still young -
ready to draw forth the light,
the soft, saturated candle
that flings its scent unto the night.
Let as laugh at things preposterous
and speak of times notorious,
those of which we are remembered.

How far we've come, old friends
through years we thought
would never end; through times
of strife and different wife;
of hardship and happiness both.
Tonight we'll suck life's marrow
From deep the pallid bone
indulge each the other in story
in tone and tome
sublime, draw forth the rich
and claret wine - it runs between
our teeth, warms the throat, the heart,
brings us full-circle to the start
the place that tells of youth and foolishness.
How little we knew then. He said,
To be young is to be sad
to be young is to be high.

So, friend, do not look back:
look forward to the light. Think not
of slight, of nights once dark.
Instead, eat now the bread
sup on soft communion
wash back with wine the sin.
Record this moment for posterity;
capture rich the night
on silvered film; those clips
that flow behind us
streaking like tinseled ribbons
through the cool september night
the late summer cloud pass
the wild jasmine in the garden
the silver in our hair, the children
at our feet, the bright laughter,
the words we string together;
these things that say:
We are here. This is now.
